1945 Martin 000-28
1945 Martin 000-28 — Wartime Herringbone Excellence
Offered here is a remarkable 1945 Martin 000-28, the desirable herringbone that delivers everything you hope for in a wartime Martin: power, clarity, touch sensitivity, and that unmistakable vintage sweetness only eighty-plus years can produce.
And the sound? Exceptional. See YouTube Video Below of this Guitar.
This 000-28 is one of the finest recording guitars I’ve ever encountered. It offers a big, warm low end, the superb clarity original herringbones are known for, and the responsiveness that the wartime tapered bracing makes so special. Fingerstyle passages bloom, flatpicking lines cut with authority, and it remains balanced no matter how you approach it.
Featuring its classic appointments—Brazilian rosewood back and sides, spruce top, ebony fingerboard and bridge, steel reinforcement bar, extremely comfortable neck and the iconic herringbone trim—this is a lifetime guitar, ready for both studio and stage.
This example is all original aside from a style-correct ebony bridge, new saddle, and new nut. It retains its original finish along with the original bridge plate, with what appears to be a light clear overspray on portions of the top and sides that was likely done decades ago. The back remains unsprayed maintaining a completely original finish.
Structurally, it’s in excellent condition for its age. The guitar has a few larger back cracks and some on the side that have been expertly sealed and cleated, plus a small crack on the treble-side lower bout that has been just as cleanly addressed. A full neck reset, refret, and replica bridge installation were performed by Third Coast Guitar Repair less than two years ago—top-tier work that ensures this instrument plays as beautifully as it sounds. this original topbone plays like butter with the low E 12th fret action sitting in around 2.25mm and between 1.75-2mm on the high e with zero buzz up and down the neck. Plenty of height on the saddle, so this thing is ready for the next 50+ years of play. This is a player‘s guitar with expected nicks scrapes and wear that the best sounding guitars usually have after over 70-80 years of being loved and played. But make no mistake about it, the structure and playability are second to none, needs no work and is my favorite guitar in Mojo City Guitars showroom.
If you’ve been searching for a Brazilian R/W small body guitar or a truly great vintage herringbone with undeniable tone, clean professional restoration work, and no excuses, this 1945 example is the one.
